The National Year of Reading theme for December is: “Write the Future. Some write, others read and technology is bringing reading and writing closer together”.
We would like you to write a story about the future in no more than 160 characters including spaces. This is the length of a standard text message. Entries can be written in SMS language or Standard English and can be sent by text to 07781481710 or by email jhudson@warrington.gov.uk. Please make sure you include your name, school and year group with your entry.

What we are looking for:
Originality, creativity and individuality
Adherence to the theme of the future
Unusual imagery or word play
Attention to the sounds of words
Overall impact of the story
An understanding of using language appropriately for purpose and audience

Things you need to know:
Keep your entry within the 160 character limit including spaces
The competition is open to all learners in Y5 and Y6, KS3, KS4 and KS5
You must include your name, school and year group with your entry.
For entries by SMS this will mean your entry will extend over the 160 character limit. The story itself must be no longer than 160 characters including spaces.
Failure to adhere to the rules will result in disqualification
There is no entry fee (apart from the cost of sending the text which will be charged at the rate set by your network provider)
You may enter as many times as you wish.
The judges’ decisions are final.
A prize of SansaExpress 1 GB MP3 players will be awarded to the winner in each of the 4 categories
Prizes will be presented at our National Year of Reading Celebration Event on January 23rd.

What’s involved? Plan an activity to promote and develop reading for pleasure in your school and then write it up on the NYR’s Wikireadia . You will be automatically entered in the competition if you start your article with the words “Autumn Challenge”

The aim of the book award is to promote the use of local libraries and reading for enjoyment in Warrington in this National Year of Reading.  Everyone is invited to vote for his/her favourite book in school, the library or at leisure centres. The winning book will be announced in December 2008
